Richard Henry Lee makes his first appeareance in The First Fourth of July (episode)

He is a prominent Virginian statesmen and one of the most passionate and bold delegates who helped convince the second Continental Congress to declare independence, initiating the American Revolution.

In the series he is depicted with blond hair and seemingly brown eyes while in real life paintings portray him with blue. He wears a dark overcoat, cravat, and a blue vest.

His most famous scene in the series is when he announces "Lee's Resolution" (June 7, 1776) during the Second Continental Congress, resolving that "these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."

He was in Virginia when Congress voted on and adopted the Declaration of Independence but signed the document when he returned to Congress.

He is elected the 6th President of Congress under the Articles of Confederation on November 30, 1784 and he presided until November 23, 1785, helping direct policy and the shape of the budding new nation.

While his military involvement is not shown in the series, Lee participates in skirmishes, notably in the Southern Theater of the American Revolution, such as at the Battle of Fort Ninety-Six in South Carolina.

  • In real life, Lee kept a hand wrapped in black silk to hide the deformation caused by a hunting accident
