Born in West Africa, Moses was brought in chains to America as a slave along with his brother, Cato. Because of his ingenuity, Moses learned to read, forge metal, and buy his freedom from his master, thus freeing himself from slavery. He eventually moved to Philadelphia and found work at Dr. Franklin's print shop.

Moses looks out for Dr. Franklin's young wards, James Hiller and Henri. He values his freedom more than anything. Iron-willed Moses will never allow anyone to strip him of his dignity, despite their feelings on race. By working at the print shop, Moses hopes to educate children of all colors of the ideals of America so that everyone may one day be free.

Trivia Edit

  • At the end of the series, Moses decides that he will create a school for free black children to learn to read and write, to which Dr. Franklin offers all his support. Given how such institutions are the targets of hate crimes, and would later be temporarily limited by laws, his prospects appear rather bleak.
  • Moses's name could be a reference to the biblical figure of the same name who led his people (the Hebrews) to freedom from enslavement in Egypt.
