Cato is Moses' younger brother.
He was initially sold on the block at Charleston, South Carolina alongside his brother as a slave, but he eventually ran away, only to be captured. He was seen being sold on the auction block again in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was sold to the Abernathy Plantation in Richmond, Virginia. Cato eventually joined the British Army in hopes that if the British won the war, he would gain freedom, but this hope was dashed when the British lost the war after the Siege of Yorktown.
During the siege, he was hidden by Hessian Captain Gottfried Hiltz alongside other negro soldiers. After the siege, he spent a lot of time on the run from people who wanted to capture him, and eventually, went to Nova Scotia, Canada with Mrs. Radcliffe, a British loyalist and friend of Sarah and her mother, and Moses was pleased that his brother would finally be free.
